Janhvi, welcome to Figuring Out. I want to start with the word that has followed your career from day one — nepotism. How do you actually think about it?
I used to get defensive. Now I think it is a fair starting point. Yes, I had access. But access is not a career. The audience does not care about your last name if you cannot make them feel something. The job is to earn the seat, not just inherit the chair.
How do you handle criticism that feels personal?
I separate the useful part from the cruel part. If ten people say the same thing, there is probably truth in it. If one person is just being mean, that says more about them. The hard part is being honest enough to know which is which.
Is it harder to build your own identity when your mother is Sridevi?
It is impossible to compete with a memory that people have made perfect. I stopped trying. My only option is to be the best version of myself, even if that version is smaller, messier or less loved. That is the only race I can actually run.
What has acting taught you about empathy?
That you cannot play a life you do not understand. Every character forces you to imagine why someone made the choices they made. That practice changes how you treat people off camera too.
Final question — what would you tell a young actor starting out today?
Learn to be okay with silence. Most of acting is listening and waiting. The people who last are not the loudest; they are the ones who can hold a moment without filling it with noise.
